SIL Pacific is the face of SIL International in the Pacific region. We serve language communities by supporting them in achieving their language development goals. These may include language assessment and documentation, translation of Scripture texts, training, literacy and education, health and community development resources. SIL Pacific supplies training and consulting services in these domains. We make our services available to all, without regard to religious belief, political ideology, gender, race or ethnolinguistic background.
SIL staff in the Pacific represent over 20 different countries and nationalities. We are personally funded, predominantly by individuals and churches from our home countries.
SIL’s literacy and language work in the Pacific has been recognised by UNESCO and other humanitarian NGOs.
SIL International is a faith-based nonprofit organisation committed to serving language communities worldwide as they build capacity for sustainable language development. SIL does this primarily through research, translation, training and materials development. Founded in 1934, SIL has grown from a small summer linguistics training program with two students to a staff of over 5,500 coming from over 60 countries. SIL's linguistic investigation exceeds 2,590 languages spoken by over 1.7 billion people in nearly 100 countries.
